What we practice

Four things, one step at a time

Every class returns to these. You decide how far each drill goes.

  • 01

    Awareness

Noticing the room around you: where you stand, how you hold your shoulders and how you move through a doorway.

  • 02

    Boundaries

Saying no clearly, with your words, your posture and open hands that make space.

  • 03

    Voice

Breathing from the belly and saying stop loudly enough to be heard across a room.

  • 04

    Pad work

Strikes and kicks on pads held by a partner or an instructor, at light contact and your own pace.

Workshop series

Instructors

Who teaches you

Four instructors share the week. Sunhi and Roselande teach most classes.

  • Sunhi Pearce, owner and lead instructor, standing in a bright studio

    Sunhi Pearce

    Owner and lead instructor

Sunhi opened Hara to offer the class she wanted to find: calm, clear and led by women. She teaches Foundations and Boundaries and voice, and she plans every workshop. She speaks English and Korean.

  • Roselande Toussaint, instructor, in a plain white uniform standing on a mat in a bright hall

    Roselande Toussaint

Instructor, pad work and open practice

Roselande teaches pad work and conditioning, the lunch-hour classes and Saturday open practice. She stands beside you for your first set of strikes and keeps the pace yours.

How we run class

Checks, routines and class size

What our instructors have completed, and the routines every class follows.

Staff checks and training

  • Background checks
  • CPR and first aid
  • Mandated reporter training

Safety routines

  • Class size

Classes are limited to 12 and workshops to 16, so an instructor can watch every person's practice.

  • Consent in every drill

Partners ask before they start, agree how much contact feels right and can stop a drill at any time by saying so.

  • Mat and gear

Shoes stay off the mat. Jewelry comes out, hair is tied back and nails are short. Wraps, pads and gloves are wiped down between classes.

  • Sign-in and students under 18

Everyone signs in at the front desk. Students who are 16 or 17 join with a parent or guardian's written permission.

Questions

What women ask first

Who can join?

Women 16 and up, at any level. Students who are 16 or 17 join with a parent or guardian's written permission on the enrollment page. Everyone starts where they are.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No. Every class starts with a warm-up you can do at your own pace, and each drill has an easier and a harder way to do it. Tell an instructor at the start if something is sore and we'll change it.

What happens in a first class?

You sign in, meet the instructor and join the warm-up. Then come partner drills with pads at a pace you choose, and a few minutes at the end for questions. You never have to try a drill you don't want to.

What should I wear?

A t-shirt and loose pants or leggings you can move in. Shoes come off at the mat, jewelry comes out and hair is tied back. We have wraps and pads to use for your first class.

Can I bring a friend or watch a class?

Yes to both. Bring a friend to a first class, or ask the front desk to sit on the bench and watch one before you decide. In regular classes we keep the floor to students, so everyone can practice without an audience.

Who teaches the classes?

Women teach every class. Sunhi and Roselande lead most of them, with two more instructors for lunch-hour classes and workshops. You can meet them on the instructors page.
